This is the kitchen in the Vanderbilt Summer House, The Breakers, in Newport. My husband, David and I toured this beautiful home a few weeks ago. Another Vanderbilt summer home is the Marble House, also over the top!
Marble House was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. It was a summer house, or “cottage”, as Newporters called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. But Marble House was much more; it was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport’s subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent stone palaces.
The library in The Breakers is a beautiful room, I could picture myself curling up and reading a book here.
Notice the architecture and craftsmanship details on the walls and arched entryways.
The Breakers blew me away! Mr. Vanderbilt spent an enormous amount of time and money on this place. Sadly, he enjoyed only one summer here before he passed away.
