Happy New Year!

Our Lord is a God of second chances and new beginnings. Every morning, every Sunday, every first day of the month, and now the beginning of a new year, calls us to focus on how we can be more like Him. Happy New Year everyone, it’s going to be a wonderful 2016!

You Can Be Holy

First Presbyterian Church, Georgetown, Texas

First Presbyterian Church, Georgetown, Texas

“You were taught with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV).

Many years ago there was a book, I’m OK—You’re OK. But I was not OK. I was selfish and no amount of chanting positive affirmations could change that. Because the truth is, being selfish is not OK. Nobody wants “he was selfish” written on his tombstone.

The instant I became a Christian something did change. I received the Holy Spirit who daily encourages me to give up my old selfish ways and to consider others more important than myself. For awhile I didn’t listen, but the Holy Spirit never gives up. As I read the Bible and listened to Christian music, I experienced a renewing of my mind.

Every battle begins in the mind. It’s important to realize that fact, because many times we disregard our thought life when seeking change. We try changing appearances and even the way we talk. However, the way we think is of greatest importance. Otherwise we fall back into the old habits.

Remember at the last supper when Jesus washed Peter’s feet (John 13:10)? Jesus told Peter “you are clean though not every one of you. For He knew Judas was going to betray Him, and that’s why He said not every one was clean. Even though Jesus knew that Peter would later deny Him, that behavior didn’t make him unclean. Over time, through the work of the Holy Spirit, Peter’s behavior did change.

The miracle is that I didn’t become holy by behaving righteously, being holy means being set apart by God and that happened when I became a Christian. You are holy, and through the work of the Holy Spirit your behavior will change.

Another adventure!

Just off Ramp Road you can catch a fantastic nature tour. Wildside Tours gives one of the most enjoyable and educational tours around. Captain Jeanette guided us through Cocoa Beach brackish waters to a multitude of wildlife encounters. I don’t believe I have ever seen so many dolphins on a single tour, including the famous bottlenecks. In addition we saw manatees napping in the coves, not to mention a myriad of birds.

We found many dolphins on this tour

Captain Jeanette’s assistant was Michelle from Arvada, Colorado and she did a terrific job pointing out and identifying many different birds.

Michelle, assistant to the Captain, here with me. She's a Colorado gal living in Cocoa!

Holy Spirit Church, Isle aux Morts, Newfoundland

Holy Spirit Church,
Isle aux Morts,
Newfoundland

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV).

When I think of God’s workmanship, I have to look at the things all around me. He created all the stars in the heavens. Every time I look up into a star studded night sky, my whole being soars with delight and wonder. Twinkling lights against a sapphire sky can take my breath away!

God is all about creativity. I look at the Rocky Mountains and try to understand the grandeur of the artist. I can’t help but think if Him. The majesty of the front range doesn’t begin to compare to Him. And, I am always astonished at the way He changes the appearance of those mountains every day. Every day the shadow of the clouds, the snow on the continental divide, the rain, or some other natural phenomena changes the look.

At the seashore I feel His power with each wave that washes up. God does not create ordinary things. He is supernatural. That, added to His creative genius (which is more than we could ever get our heads around) makes His creations both amazing and inspiring.

Our minds, bodies, and souls are made by a creative God Who didn’t spare the energy or creativity it took to make us. We are amazing in so many ways. Did you know that our noses can remember fifty thousand different scents? And that’s just our nose! The human eye and distinguish about ten million different colors.

In a lifetime, your brain’s long-term memory can hold as many as one quadrillion (that’s one million billion) separate bits of information. Now THAT’S a miracle!

Hollywood Studios

David and Vicki at Hollywood Studios

David and Vicki at Hollywood Studios

David and I spent an action packed day at Hollywood Studios in Orlando recently. This theme park is a bit smaller than Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios, making it easier to get around the entire area in one day. Even so, we left a few things for next time. For those who must walk less distance, electric carts are available and well worth the rental fee.

The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular is a must see. This is the first picture I got as Indiana Jones repelled down a thin rope onto the stage. This scene began our trip through the production of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lots of action and audience participation made the show delightful as well as educational.

The Great Movie ride took us through time as we reviewed famous scenes from great movies throughout the history with some narration about each production. It reminded me that I need to visit some of the titles again.

My favorite ride was Toy Store Mania. Let me just say that you will love it, even if you don’t play video games. I don’t want to spoil the surprise!

The street performances throughout the park are entertaining and humorous. We enjoyed lunch at the Prime Time Café, a fifties décor which included chrome tables and chairs. It brought us back to childhood and TV with metal cases and lot of ‘snow’. The Muppet Show is recommended. And this is the last year of the Osborn Christmas Light Show. Don’t miss it!

Happy Trails!

Missunderstood

Amazingly, my latest book, Misunderstood, is available on audible.com and iTunes, already! It is soon to be available on whisper sync with the kindle edition. I want to thank Denise Washington-Blomberg for her turning this project around in record time. Her professional voice is much appreciated as it adds dimension to the four women depicted in the book. I especially like to hear Denise quote Scripture. She possesses a pure and deep love for the Word that shines in this book.

Commentaries have made an enormous contribution to those of us who want to better understand the Scriptures. In most cases I agree completely with their remarks. However, in the case of judgments against women, opinions written by men from ages past leave me wondering if they really understood.

Women have been misunderstood since time began. In ages past, women became possessions of their fathers when they were born into this world and were passed to another man when they were married, if that husband died, they were often passed to a brother, just as one would pass a pet from one family to another.

If these same commentaries had been written by women, they would most certainly tell a different story.
