“We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him” (1 John 5:18 NIV).

Now that we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ we are perfect and never sin. No! That is far from the truth. The truth is that believers sometimes fail in their attempts to be more like Him. Sometimes we get angry when we shouldn’t. Sometimes we backslide. Sometimes we just miss the mark.

What makes us different from the rest of the world is that we can go to the Father through Jesus, repent and confess our sin, and ask for forgiveness. God forgives us and we can leave that sin behind. It frees us to pick up where we left off in serving our Lord. No, Christians are not perfect, but they are forgiven.

We live in a world where we are confronted by sin every day. We go about our business during the day and drive past advertisements that shouldn’t even be on the highways. We go shopping and as we check out we see gossip magazines on the stand addressing all the messy personal issues of famous people that are idolized, then we got home and turn on the TV to watch the news only to see advertisements that push premarital sex and immorality of all kinds.

It is God’s will that we live in this world without sin. We are confronted by it all the time, but Jesus promised to bring us through. The very fact that He was tempted in the wilderness for forty days gives us the assurance that He knows what we deal with every day.

The evil one has been defeated at Calvary. He has no power over us. He cannot make you do anything. One of my favorite Scriptures is “resist the devil and he will flee” (James 4:7). This is so practical when you are tempted. Resist the devil. In the name of Jesus command him to leave you alone and fill your thoughts with Christ. It works. He leaves. Perhaps for ten seconds, perhaps for one day, or until you let your guard down; but the devil flees. He wants no part of praising Jesus. The miracle is that nothing can stop you from praising the Lord!

“Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2 NKJV).

The Message puts it like this, “But friends, that’s exactly who we are: children of God. And that’s only the beginning. Who knows how we’ll end up! What we know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we’ll see Him—and in seeing Him, become like Him. All of us who look forward to His Coming stay ready, with the glistening purity of Jesus’ life as a model for our own.”

It seems impossible to describe this incredible relationship with God, being His child. I love the fact that it is an exciting uncertainty, this adventure with Him. We know He promises to take care of us and protect us, but we never know exactly where He is going to put us. In the same way, He promises us that one day we will be like Him and we ache for the day that happens, the day of His return.

In the meantime, we strive to be like Christ everyday. He came, not only to save us, but to teach us how to live. He painted a beautiful picture of what it is to live a sinless life. Some days we fail miserably. Those days are what I call ‘learning days’ because I either learn some thing that I need to change, or I am reminded that I need to lean on Abba, Father.

We really don’t know what being like Christ will be. We’re promised a glorified body, so we know we will have a body. We are promised to be like Him. He is eternal, beautiful, caring, comforting, compassionate, courageous, creating, distinctive, empowering, forgiving, glorified, holy, honorable, infallible, inspiring, kind, loving, perfect, powerful, protective, pure, righteous, supernatural, and victorious!
The miracle is that you will be like Him.

“What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are. But that’s also why the world doesn’t recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who He is or what He’s up to” (1 John 3:1 The Message).

At times it is inconceivable to me that the God who spoke the universe into existence loves me so much that He adopted me. That is an overwhelming fact. And then I think that He created me; and I was His in the first place. Everything belongs to Him. But He didn’t want it that way.

He gave me free will so that I could decide for myself. I could have rejected Him. He wove a tapestry of my life and drew me to Him. I made a clear confession to Him, understanding that I needed to humbly repent of my sins, and He sealed me with His Holy Spirit. I feel His love all around me every day.

Our relationship could never be as intense and passionate as it is, had He just told me one day that He created me and I belonged to Him and He would control my life. Instead, He gave me the freedom to choose Him. Once the choice was made, once that decision was locked in, there was no going back. Earlier I said that when I first accepted Christ, I had no idea what I was getting into. At one point I felt like God had made a horrible mistake and that my life was a horrendous reflection on Him.

Finally I came to understand that being a child of God is a miracle of His love and grace. I get to spend a life time experiencing that love and grace every day. Most of all I get to experience Him. After all these years I still search the Scriptures to find out more about Him. I crave stories from other believers about their experiences with Him. Every day is an adventure with Him.

And the miracle is that He let you choose!
